Chapter 104: Investigation
The lunch was delectable and I was hungry. However, Tong Lin didn’t appear to have much appetite. He only looked at me. I ate as gracefully as I could. When I was 80 percent full, I felt chattier. Hunger always annoyed me.
I munched on the juicy steak and looked at Tong Lin. “Why don’t you just tell me what you want? Aren’t you anxious just waiting around?”
Tong Lin shook his head with a smile. “I’m not.”
“But I am!” I countered coldly.
“Why are you anxious? This place is like heaven and you lived here when you were young. If staying here can help you recover your memory, it’s worth it even if we stay here forever.” He said evenly.
“Are you hoping that I’d remember where my parents hid the treasure?” I picked the bones gingerly out from the fish. Tong Lin was startled and I smiled. I knew it!
Then I felt someone coming from my back. I turned around on instinct, grabbed the person and my fork stabbed into the invader’s arm.
There was a scream and then plates crashed. I jumped away agilely. When I saw what really happened, I was stunned. It was just a maid coming to serve a bowl of soup. Thanks to me, the hot soup splattered all over her and the fork stabbed into the back of her hand. She screamed in pain and I was flustered.
My body moved faster than my brain, or rather I was still under an extremely tensed mindset. If someone came to me from behind, I’d counter on instinct.
The maids came to pick up the girl, but to my surprise they called her Miss Yan. Miss Yan summoned as much dignity as she could and glanced at Tong Lin with apology. “I, I just wanted to serve Nanxing a bowl of soup, I didn’t expect her…” to be such a barbarian! I finished the sentence in my heart for me. I looked at her with interest. Who was this Miss Yan?
Tong Lin said coolly, “Didn’t you have the maid do that?”
Miss Yan lowered her head. “I, I, just want to be useful.”
I smiled. “I’m sorry, please don’t come from behind me again. I’m quite violent apparently.”
Miss Yan quickly walked over. “Nanxing, I’m sorry, I didn’t mean it.”
I looked at me. “Just how much do you want Tong Lin to like you? I have injured you but you apologized to me? Girl, the more you degrade yourself, the more unlikely he’s going to value you, understood?” Miss Yan’s face paled.
Tong Lin frowned. “Bring Miss Yan away to dress her wounds!”
The maids obliged. Looking at the mess, I lost my appetite. I shrugged, “Sorry, I didn’t mean to do that.”
Tong Lin’s face was dark for the first time. “I heard when you were at the Nan Family, you were cautious, reticent and easily bullied.”
“You heard wrong. I am actually vicious, venomous and unruly. I have a little uncle who will always vouch for me and a teacher who will side with me no matter what.” I said smugly.
“That’s because they have ulterior motive, don’t be stupid!” Tong Lin warned coldly.
I chuckled. “Who are you to talk about them? You have an ulterior motive too. In comparison, I prefer my little uncle’s method of procuring the ulterior motive, at least he really did care about me.”
Tong Lin’s face was frosty. “He just wants you to hand over your parents’ treasure to him voluntarily.”
I smirked, “And what’s wrong with that?”
“You… Idiot!” Tong Lin stormed away. I smiled brightly. Who is the idiot here? But perhaps it is that Miss Yan who had made him so flustered.
I didn’t return to my room but walked out the door. Since this was my childhood home then I better took some time to walk around. I wanted to recover my memory, at least I was more serious about that than Tong Lin. Jing Tian thought me that hiding my emotions was the best protection a person could have.
With the thought of Jing Tian, my heart burned. I wonder if my little uncle had woken up and if Jing Tian was injured.
The image that I saw, was it real or fake?
I believed against hope that it was fake but there was a voice inside my heart that told me that it was real.
