In the quiet of the study, Luciel leaned over the desk, absorbed in perfecting the Black Tortoise's lesson plans. The room was hushed, except for the soft scratch of his pen against paper and the occasional murmur of his own thoughts.
"It's really troublesome…" he muttered, more to himself than anyone else.
He reached for the teacup beside him, only to find it nearly empty. The tea leaves had long since steeped out their flavor, leaving only a faint, bitter residue.
Mino had taken Mia out for a morning stroll through Black Tortoise City, leaving Luciel alone. Though it was a welcome quiet, he found it difficult to fully focus; the meticulous attention he usually devoted to such matters was interrupted by the absence of his companions.
A light knock echoed at the study door.
"Come in," he called, setting the pen down.
The door opened with a soft creak, and Sophia stepped in, her movements light and measured. She paused beside the desk, glancing at the papers strewn across the surface.
"Master Luciel," she said quietly, "Miss Liyi Yi has arrived to report on work."
"Let her in," he replied without lifting his gaze from the scattered pages.
"Yes, Master." Sophia removed the empty teacup from the desk and exited as silently as she had entered.
Moments later, Liyi Yi appeared, bowing respectfully as she crossed the threshold.
"Master Luciel."
Luciel set down his pen and regarded her. "How is the bookstore business?"
Liyi Yi's green eyes sparkled with pride. "Thirty copies of Chaos sold out yesterday," she said, her voice brimming with excitement. She placed a large cloth bag on the table with a soft thud. "These are the beast-grade stones obtained from the book sales—3,000 primary high-grade beast spars in total."
Luciel's eyes glimmered with satisfaction. Three million evolution points. Another step closer to the seventh-level domesticated beasts he planned to evolve.
"Thank you for your hard work," he said lightly.
"Also," Liyi Yi continued, "thirty more books will be on the shelves today. For the next few days, we won't need to print as many copies of Chaos."
Luciel shook his head. "The next sales probably won't match yesterday's. Books are luxury goods, not everyone can afford them." He tapped a finger thoughtfully on the tabletop. "Piracy is inevitable. If intelligence dealers or family forces buy a book, Ken will make sure a copy is circulated. The only buyers left are independent practitioners and capable hunters."
"Understood," Liyi Yi said, nodding. She had already noticed the caliber of the customers yesterday—ordinary people wouldn't have been able to afford the books.
"Anything else?" Luciel asked, raising an eyebrow.
"No, Master," Liyi Yi replied softly. "I will return to my duties."
"Go ahead."
She paused, glanced back at him twice, and left with light, almost floating steps. Sophia followed shortly after, placing a freshly brewed teacup to Luciel's right hand before retreating silently.
Luciel picked up the warm tea. The first sip sent a refreshing coolness through his mind, clearing the mental fog. He set the cup down, reached into the bag, and converted the 3,000 junior high-grade spars into evolution points. Three million evolution points now accounted for, on top of the previous balance—enough to evolve three seventh-level domesticated beasts.
He hesitated briefly. Should he save up to ten million points to prioritize evolving the Rock Turtle to the eighth level? The thought was tempting; a larger territory could accommodate more people in Life, expanding the city's capacity and potential.
Just then, a small smile curved the corner of his lips. He sensed a familiar presence returning.
Downstairs at Heavens gate, the crowd of Amestris City residents was growing restless. Many had come to the tower not to shop at the commercial street, but to purchase goods from those returning from the marketplace, hoping to snag something at the original price.
"Friend, can you sell me some of those dried sweet potatoes at the original price?" a bald man called out, stopping a young man who had just descended the steps.
"I waited in line for these. If you want them, the price has to go up. Original price is impossible," the boy replied, tone sharp with pride.
The bald man fumed, tugging at his beard. "Price increase? Then I might as well go up myself."
"You still linger here?" the young man sneered. "What are you waiting for?"
The bald man opened his mouth to argue, only to freeze at the sudden commotion behind him.
"Oh my god! Fierce beasts! Run!"
"The Moon Wolves are coming!"
"The Moon Wolf King!"
Chaos erupted among the crowd. People fled in panic, some running straight back to Amestris City. Others, desperate and desperate for shelter, scrambled toward Tower, hoping to use their fierce beast spar to buy "clearance texts" and find refuge in Black Tortoise City.
Not far away, the Moon Wolf King emerged, flanked by a pack of ferocious white-furred wolves. The sight was terrifying—a wave of small-scale feral predators exuding an overwhelming aura of power.
The Moon Wolf King alone was massive, over five meters in length and three meters in height. Snow-white fur glimmered under the morning sun, and each step radiated a faint, chilling white light that made the hearts of onlookers pound in terror.
Howls echoed from the pack as they advanced. Occasionally, a lone moon wolf would leap and cry out, further adding to the panic.
"Wow…" murmured the crowd. The sapphire-blue eyes of the Moon Wolf King glimmered with recognition and expectation as it approached the Rock Turtle.
And then it stopped.
The wolves clustered together, halting their advance. They lifted their heads, fixated on the massive figure of Luciel as he descended from the sky. A faint, amused smile touched the corner of his mouth.
"Look who's back," he murmured. His presence radiated authority, yet it was gentle enough to calm the Moon Wolf King.
The massive beast lowered its head, brushing Luciel with a soft nudge. Its howls were low, almost reverent. Luciel chuckled, pressing both hands to its massive head.
"Good boy," he said warmly.
Whispers rippled through the crowd. "Who is that? Why is he so close to the Moon Wolf King?"
"Could it be domesticated?"
Luciel lifted the beast's chin and stroked its fur, watching it settle against him with trust. "You've been wronged for a while," he said softly, "but soon, when the Black Tortoise evolves, your range will expand a hundredfold."
The Moon Wolf King let out a soft, grateful growl, clearly understanding his master's words.
"Are these all your clan members?" Luciel asked, scanning the assembled wolves.
The Moon Wolf King roared in response. Immediately, the rest of the pack dropped to the ground, bowing respectfully. Their synchronized movement was almost ceremonial, a display of recognition and loyalty toward Luciel.
Satisfied, he nodded. Thirty ordinary moon wolves and eight young ones, still underage. A formidable group, yet each one presented a logistical challenge. So many mouths to feed could not be ignored.
Luciel's mind worked quickly, devising a plan. "I will divide areas for your living space. You may hunt freely, but you must not enter the outer city or disturb the citizens."
The Moon Wolf King responded with two long howls, acknowledging the arrangement.
"Tail down, Black Tortoise," Luciel instructed. The massive tortoise obeyed, lowering its tail to the ground. Luciel motioned toward it. "Climb from here, as you have since youth."
The Moon Wolf King led its pack, ascending the tortoise's tail with precision. Luciel leapt onto the back of the Moon Wolf Queen, riding effortlessly while guiding the Moon Wolf King to respect the boundaries of the outer city.
From the tail of the Black Tortoise, the wolves could safely enter the city gate cave and begin to establish their territory. Luciel watched carefully, rubbing the Moon Wolf King's head.
"You've been patient," he murmured. "Soon, your hunting grounds will expand, and you'll have space to roam as you deserve."
The Moon Wolf King responded with a howl that echoed across the city, the pack's harmony and discipline evident in the way they spread out to their assigned areas.
Luciel smiled. The Black Tortoise had grown stronger, his domesticated beasts were loyal, and the city's order was preserved.
"Very good," he said, settling into the rhythm of his guardians. "Everything is proceeding as planned."
Above the city, the first light of dawn caught the gleaming fur of the Moon Wolves, signaling the beginning of a new chapter—one where Luciel's strategy, patience, and foresight would ensure that even the fiercest beasts could coexist within the Black Tortoise City's walls.
The Moon Wolf King howled once more, sharp and commanding, a signal to its clan: their new territory had been claimed, their master recognized, and their loyalty pledged.
Luciel leaned back slightly, his mind already turning to the next challenge. In the distance, Amestris City would observe these movements, and with every step, the balance of power would subtly shift.
But for now, the Black Tortoise's domain was secure.
And the Moon Wolves… were finally home.
