Since her ascension to the throne, Shangguan Yan had renamed the Imperial bed chamber as Fenglin Palace.

The fourth month in Shengdu was known as the most temperate time of the entire year, neither cold nor hot, neither arid nor humid, a perfect balance that wrapped the capital in comfort.

Shangguan Yan sat within the study of Fenglin Palace, carefully reviewing the memorandums submitted by her officials.

Upon her desk rested two framed portraits that Gu Jiao had instructed the Shadow Division to bring from the State of Zhao.

It was paintings of the dragon-and-phoenix twins.

Whenever the burdens of state affairs weighed her down to the point of exhaustion, a single glance at the portraits of the twins would dissolve her fatigue as though it had never existed.

She lifted her gaze toward the images of the children, a gentle warmth and longing flickering deep within her eyes.

It had been so long since their birth, and I still haven’t seen the little ones in person.

I heard that JiaoJiao and Ah Heng are coming to the State of Yan, but since the twins are still very young and cannot endure such a long journey, they will probably remain in the State of Zhao.

It’s such a pity not to be able to see what they look like when they are this small.

With that melancholy thought, Shangguan Yan let out a soft sigh.

Just then, Wu Sixi came scurrying in with small, hurried steps.

Bowing respectfully, he greeted, “Your Majesty.”

One look at his expression was enough for Shangguan Yan to know someone had come calling again. With a trace of helplessness, she asked, “Who is it this time?”

The “beauties” of her inner palace truly never rested.

Every night they found new ways to “accidentally” encounter her or offer themselves to her bed in increasingly creative fashions.

When she had still been the Crown Princess, she had believed that the scheming of women competing for favor was the most troublesome thing in the world.

Only after becoming the female Emperor did she realize that when men decided to act coquettish, there was simply no room left for women at all.

Some of those little foxes were downright bewitching.

Wu Sixi chuckled and said, “It’s the Imperial Advisor.”

The movement of Shangguan Yan’s brush halted midair. “Ye Qing?”

……

A quarter of an hour later, Ye Qing arrived at the study.

He was carrying a child in his left arm and another in his right.

Those who were in the know understood that he had urgent matters to report. Those who weren’t would think he had brought the children to confront Shangguan Yan, perhaps to demand she take responsibility for him and the babies!

The entire Fenglin Palace was struck dumb with bewilderment.

No wonder Her Majesty has been utterly unmoved by the handsome men of the harem.

Could it be that the seductive, wickedly charming Imperial Advisor had already stolen her heart?

“Ye Qing, what exactly are you up to?”

Even Shangguan Yan herself was completely dumbfounded.

In the middle of the night, a man had come to her carrying two babies, wearing an expression that could only be described as ‘too complicated to explain.’

No matter how she looked at it, the whole scene was utterly terrifying!

Wait.

Don’t tell me I actually did something to you?

Did you give birth to those children?

You were gone on Hidden Night Island for such a long time without returning; were you secretly avoiding me because you were pregnant for ten months and gave birth all by yourself?

The absurd thought that flashed through her mind nearly made Shangguan Yan choke on air.

She shook her head like a rattle drum, waiting for Ye Qing to offer a reasonable explanation.

Ye Qing gently set the children down upon her desk, then took out the little medicine chest from the basket on his back and placed it beside them.

At that, Shangguan Yan was left completely speechless once again.

She possessed portraits of the dragon-and-phoenix twins, looking at them every day, every night, so their faces had long since been etched deeply into her memory.

It was true that a painting could never fully capture the vividness of life, but still, the resemblance between these two children and the portraits was far too great to ignore.

One was a miniature version of JiaoJiao, and the other looked exactly like little Ah Heng.

There was no mistaking it; they had to be their biological children!

Then her gaze fell on the medicine chest.

It was unmistakably Gu Jiao’s, there could be no error about that either.

“JiaoJiao and Ah Heng are here?” Shangguan Yan asked, her voice brimming with excitement.

Ye Qing nearly jumped out of his skin. It felt as though half his soul had fled his body. Maintaining a perfectly blank expression, he said flatly, “No, only these two came.”

Shangguan Yan: “…”

Meanwhile, in the Princess Mansion of the State of Zhao.

The killing intent radiating from Gu Jiao filled the entire estate.

Even Xiao Heng didn’t dare approach her.

Her small fists were clenched so tightly that her knuckles cracked audibly.

“I swear, you’re just begging to be chopped up for firewood!”

There was no need to guess where her medicine chest, as well as the people it carried, had gone.

The Imperial Advisor’s Hall.

The operation room.

She bet a pack of spicy sticks on it!

She wasn’t particularly worried that no one would notice the children’s sudden appearance there.

After all, that operation room was guarded by death warriors. If the twins so much as let out a single cry, Ye Qing would be summoned there immediately for sure.

“That little medicine chest is getting bolder and bolder.” Gu Jiao muttered, her tone carrying a mix of exasperation and reluctant amusement. “And its abilities are growing stronger too.”

Once upon a time, the little medicine chest could teleport only itself. Now, it was even capable of taking the dragon-and-phoenix twins along with it.

Could this mean that its energy was slowly being restored, bit by bit?

The thought wasn’t entirely baseless.

Gu Jiao had long suspected that tearing through the fabric of time and space wasn’t an easy feat for the little medicine chest. It likely drained nearly all of its energy each time it did so.

That would explain why, when she first arrived in this world, the medicine chest had appeared so tattered and worn, like an old relic barely holding itself together.

Resting her chin in both hands, Gu Jiao murmured to herself, “So, what exactly is the origin of this little medicine chest? And once it fully recovers its power, what kind of surprises will it bring?”

Hmm.

Though it might end up being more of a shock than a surprise.

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
